Planting the school grounds:

  1. A plan should first be prepared, and passed by the School Board. A copy of the plan should be framed and hung in a conspicuous place in the school so that the pupils may become familiar with it.
  2. All planting should be done in conformity with the plan for each school, so that each year will see some advance towards its completion.
  3. Native trees, shrubs, climbers and showy flowering plants should be utilized as far as possible; especially those which provide useful material for nature study. This will constitute a valuable addition to the educational equipment of each school.
  4. Children to receive instruction in the preparation of the soil and method of planting.
  5. After the planting ceremony, a label should be attached to each tree, indicating its name.

  1. Relation of trees to beauty of country
  2. Protection of surface of the earth from erosion.
  3. Retention of moisture on hills resulting in the constant supply of water during hot and dry seasons, for irrigation, etc.
  4. Shelter, food, and protection to many native animals, squirrels, birds, etc.
  5. Usefulness to man
    Wood: for heat, houses, furniture, etc.
    Food: Nuts, Fruits, Maple-Sugar, etc.
    Medicine and Commercial products: Cascara, Salicin, Formaline, Wood-alcohol, Turpentine, Resin (Varnish) Cork, Paper, Excelsior, Wood-silk, etc.
  6. Shade trees (Deciduous) relation to streets, heaving, etc., Preservation Screens, and Windbreaks (Evergreen)
  7. Relation to soil conditions. (Increased top in wet environment)
  8. Different kinds of flowers, fruits, and seeds.
  9. Stems, branches and buds.
  10. Functions of roots, stems and leaves.
